Being fascinated by the songs we discover on a daily, that happens often. Being all the more fascinated by the story that has led to the composition of a track, however, happens a little less often. Therefore, when we stumbled upon the latest piece created by composer Pietro Pittari and more specifically when learned how it was written, it led us to be in a complete state of awe.

“Hymn To Nikkal” is an adaptation of one of the oldest compositions one has ever composed… or rather what remains of it. This piece comes from a old musical notations that were found by archaeologists in Syria in the 1950s, that were written on a clay tablet, and that have been written – hold on tight – 3,400 years ago. Named “Hurrian Hymn N.6”, it is dedicated to a goddess named Nikkal, whose name means “Great Lady and Fruitful”. If the original composer remains unknown to date, their work have been transcribed and adapted to modern musical writing by musicologist Richard Dumbrill, and later on adapted by Pietro Pittari in a neoclassical and ambient piano piece.

If this is not the most beautiful and actual journey through time that music has to offer, we don’t know what it. Wishing you a great listening session !

And for those who wonder what the original piece is, here is an interpretation of what it would have sounded like back then.
