Love : an infinite inspiration source for all of the artists on Earth. Whether they tell of its positive or negative effects, everyone expresses their views & feelings about this universal emotion is expressed in a unique and personal way ; Zoé Watson, on her side, expresses the pain & delusions felt in her recent past on the 6 tracks of her latest EP : “Withdrawals”. By swaying between descriptive words and aerial melodies that depict the state of a mind that is & has been tormented by love’s bitter side, Zoé Watson describes her own experiences by describing the stings and wounds that love has left on her heart ; “Withdrawals” turned out to be cathartic for the young half-French half-British artist. Listen to it below !

As painful as they can be, the emotions that Zoé Watson has felt after the breakup that she went through have taken on a liberating tint once she has turned them into songs. Written between London and the French countryside, “Withdrawals” is meaningful all the way through ; each song tells about a specific stage of love and its related feelings, and of moments that have helped her to go forward and to move on.

“Love is rose-tinted
Love is a rose-tinted lens”

– Rose – Zoé Watson

The EP starts on the ethereal notes of “Rose”, a song she describes as the expression of love and isolation at the same time ; a bittersweet feeling is heard & felt in the melody as well as in the lyrics, and love is described here as a filter that we apply on our daily life and which cancels out the ability to see things clear. The tone of the EP is set !

Then, after having listened to “Angel”, a singular song which tells of the dissociation between the body and the spirit that one can experience, it is a track that has been inspired by Greek mythology which catches our attention ; “Calypso” unveils one of the harsher side of love : its refusal. And although the subject is rather hard to talk about, Zoé Watson contrasts her voice, full of emotions, with an elevated electro-indie melody that recalls of both romantic and melancholic ballads.

Then, as we listen to the followings songs, we are first called to the lullaby aspects of “Withdrawals”, before seeing through the artist’s eyes her desperate wish to be loved on the track “Mr Wrong”. Finally, it is on a nostalgic tone that Zoé Watson puts an end to an EP that feels like a personal diary.
