There are voices that take our breath away from the very first seconds, and this is the case for the independent American artist Brendan Cope. He is largely influenced by artists ranging from the tortured pop of James Blake to the alternative experiments of FKA Twigs, and he announced his comeback onto the music scene after an artistic and digital hiatus – he in fact took a big step back from social media – in 2020. Let’s listen to his single “Nothing I Have”, released on streaming platforms three weeks ago, alongside a personal and sensitive interpretation of “Everything I Wanted” by Billie Eilish. To be listened to below !

“Is this was I wanted or just the past ?”
– Nothing I Have – Brendan Cope

By using a breathy synth in a modern and unusual way on an alternative electronic production, Brendan Cope takes us into a universe where his voice is the main feature of his music, and which intertwines beautifully with his feelings. These feelings, he expresses them softly, putting the pain at bay in order to answer lots of questions of his inner self. By doing so, he unveils little by little, as his voice loosens and takes up more space, the doubt, the delusions, and the impression of not knowing if the decisions taken in his past really helped him move forward.

From the very first instants of the song, Brendan Cope gives us the impression of breezing through new alternative soundscapes, however, the chorus as well as the following verses remind us of some more famous productions. Brendan Cope indeed gives us to see his vision of Bon Iver and Hozier’s music through his own creative filter. These sound experiments coupled with sensitive lyrics directly inspired by his personal growth make “Nothing I Have” a track that we enjoy listening to over and over again, getting a different feeling every time we hit play again.

Similar to Brendan Cope : Victor Solf describes the feeling of not belonging in his latest single “I Don’t Fit”.

And as we said in the introduction, “Nothing I Have” was released on streaming platforms alongside a cover of  “Everything I Wanted” by Billie Eilish. So, if you want to hear his version of the song and more specifically a version filled with emotions where Brendan Cope’s gets more fragile, we encourage you to listen to it on your favorite streaming platform !
