Organic melodies, ethereal voices and dreamy music are the three major elements of Christina Ward’s music. Her music resemble the pop-folk songs of First Aid Kit and the neo-classical music of Agnes Obel ; Christina Ward develops a musical universe that is both grandiose and intimate, and that contrasts feelings of grandeur in her melodies with personal thoughts in her lyrics. Today, she released “Rent”, a homemade four-track EP that is as melancholic as it is dreamy. Listen to it below !

While the universe of Christina Ward is largely punctuated by notes of acoustic guitar, it is also composed of some electronic elements which give an almost surreal feel to her music. One may have already had that impression on her previous releases – particularly on “Born”, a single released in 2020 – and this impression is affirmed and confirmed on “Rent”, a self-produced EP that has nothing to envy to the great productions recorded & mixed in big studios.

Christina Ward invites us back into her world for a little less than fifteen minutes, and our journey begins with a song called “Ghost”. Certainly the most ethereal and dreamy track of the whole EP, it starts off on a few acoustic guitar chords that allow Christina Ward’s voice to settle, or should we say to split, since it is lightly layered, giving us the impression of listening to distant memories or her thoughts in her own head. Violins appear in the background around the middle of the song, adding an extra dimension and a different feel to the track.

Similar to Christina Ward : Cosette : her first EP “Gameboy” shows that there is a parallel universe where the eighties and futuristic pop music coexist.

After listening to “Ghost” we get to a track called “Rent”. It is certainly the most folk song of the EP, however, it is also paradoxically the one with the most electronic elements to it ; “Rent” is a sensible folk ballad which subtly tells us of the idea of evolution and reincarnation.

“You were designed, as a fossil in the ground
But we’re all the same”
– Christina Ward – Rent

We then listen to “Nightmare”, a darker and more electronic-oriented track than the others, before accepting Christina Ward’s invitation to open our eyes on “Wake Up”. It’s the last song of the EP, and it softly speaks of dreaming of a loved one, a story that is told over an instrumental that could easily qualify as a lullaby. “Wake Up” is certainly the best way to end the EP, as it leaves our minds filled with calm melodies !
