Aonian : a producer whose popularity is growing by the day in the world of house, downtempo and electro-chill music. He had reached the ears of many listeners when he released his first track – a single called “Ascent” – and for good reason : his music, no matter how electronic it may be, makes any listener who comes across his music want to dance thanks to the organic & traditional elements that we get to hear between two electronic kicks. Aonian’s music roots in Mediterranean music, making for an eclectic and refreshing soundscape. Let’s listen to “Hideout”, a single which announces the release of an album in a few months from now.

From the very beginning of the track, the organic sounds & instruments we get to hear call us, grab us and take us to the core of Aonian’s world. If the rhythm is still yet to be defined by an organic kick during the very first seconds of the track, the percussions and other instruments used to define the atmosphere of the track are enough for us to visualize and understand his universe. However, when we get to hear the electronic side of the track, Aonian’s music immediately reminds us of the work of Bonobo or Viken Arman, especially for its power and fragility combined. Then, it is the piano chords which calms us and guides us until the end of our Greek-filled electronic music.

Similar to Aonian : Listening to the favorite tracks of Di Laif, an electronic music producer that brings us back to ancestral times.

That said, even if the track itself is very electronic and made for us to dance along, “Hideout” is a track whose first aim was not to make people dance, and what inspired the track is actually far from that idea. Aonian has actually composed this track to describe, in his own way, his vision of everyone’s “safe space”, this space – material or not – in which we take refuge to relax, focus, or simply reconnect with our inner self. He describes this feeling & space using organic instruments from his native land and by improvising on the piano. These sounds recall a feeling of familiarity to him, a feeling he cherishes dearly.

The motif was written on the Oud (a popular traditional instrument often played in Greece, editor’s word), but I then recorded it on the piano where it took a completely different form, and I ended up adding organic percussive elements built from places and memories of my motherland. I wanted to bring out a sense of familiarity and safety from those sounds and melodies, a feeling that I fear has been missing this last year from our lives. – Aonian about the making of “Hideout”
